Zooarchaeologist

We are looking for a Zooarchaeologist at the Supervisor or Project Officer level to join our post-excavation department in our Cardiff office. As we expand our specialist services, the successful candidate will play a key role in supervising the team, contributing to a range of post-excavation tasks, and supporting the department’s growth. 
 
Successful candidates should be able to demonstrate: 
  • Experience with collecting, processing, and identification of faunal bone 
  • Production of zooarchaeological assessment reports  
  • Experience of leading and participating in the archaeological post-excavation process 
  • High level of organisational skills 
  • Knowledge to provide guidance to field teams on sampling strategy and excavation of ABGs 
  • Experience with micro-fauna identification desirable  
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidance  
 
All candidates should be able to demonstrate the following: 
  •  Varied archaeological experience. 
  • Good knowledge of British archaeology. 
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety considerations pertaining to archaeology 
  • Excellent punctuality and timekeeping. 
  • Current UK driving licence preferred.

Environmental Archaeologist

We are looking for an Environmental Archaeologist specialising in archaeobotanical at project officer or supervisor level, to join our post-excavation department in our Cardiff office. The successful candidate will be expected to supervise our environmental processing teams and contribute to a range of post-excavation tasks.  They should have demonstrable experience of successfully supervising staff and be reliable, flexible, driven and innovative, with excellent communication skills.

Successful candidates should be able to demonstrate: 
  • Experience with collecting and processing archaeobotanical samples 
  • Experience sorting archaeobotanical samples and identifying environmental material 
  • Experience of leading and participating in the archaeological post-excavation process 
  • High level of organisational skills 
  • Production of basic descriptive archaeobotanical reports based on macro-remains assemblages 
  • Knowledge to provide guidance to field teams on sampling strategy 
Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidance  
 
All candidates should be able to demonstrate the following:

Graphics/Illustrator

JOB SUMMARY
The role of the Archaeological Illustrator is to prepare illustrations, graphics and images for assigned projects, while working as a member of the graphics department. An Illustrator is expected to work to agreed Rubicon illustration standards, and work to the deadlines and budgets set down by the Graphics/Project Manager.
Summary of essential job functions
  • Produce all variations of archaeological illustration for report & publication graphics
  • Produce artefact illustrations when required
  • Produce artefact photography when required
  • Produce reconstruction drawings when required
  • Produce promotional material when required
  • Adhere to ‘house-style’
  •  Adhere to specific instruction or drawing briefs
  • Manage personal timescales as set by project demands
  • Work as part of a team
  • Liaise with Graphics Manager to ensure compliance with project needs
  • Regular reporting of project progress to Graphics Manager or Operations Director
  • Notify any potential difficulties to the Graphics Manager in a timely fashion
  • Liaise with Project Managers and Project Officers for graphics needs
  • Assist Graphics Manager in costing and budget creation for project illustration
  • Assist Graphics Manager in advising project staff of the best methods to achieve desired aims
  • Assist Graphics Manager in ensuring graphics requirements are supplied to the department by field staff in a timely manner
  • Ensure graphics requirements are supplied to the field staff in a timely manner
  • Undertake tasks such as may be assigned to the Graphics Department from time to time
  • Undertake other post-excavation tasks such as may be assigned
  • Responsible for compliance with the Integrated Management System (IMS)
  • Design of heritage display/information boards when required
Minimum requirements
· Archaeological background
· Finds illustration experience
· Reconstruction illustration experience
· Knowledge of accepted illustration conventions
· Highly Skilled in Adobe Illustrator, QGIS
· Knowledgeable in Adobe Photoshop & InDesign, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Pro
· Studio photography experience an advantage
· Membership of CIfA Graphics Archaeology Group

Project Manager

Job Description: 
Red River Archaeology Group are currently recruiting for a flexible, driven and innovative Project Manager to join the team. The successful candidate will be expected to manage a range of projects and to assist with continued business development. The role will involve managing archaeological projects from birth to grave, including (but not limited to) compiling or contributing to tenders, liaising with clients, managing budgets, allocating and managing resources, reporting to senior managers, ensuring quality and compliance in all elements of a project and quality assurance in reporting and publication.   
We are seeking candidates who can showcase a diverse skill set, including proficiency in the excavation and post-excavation processes. An in-depth understanding of Scottish archaeology, coupled with comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation and frameworks, is essential. Experience in project management is also beneficial, but training and mentorship can be provided in this regard if a candidate can demonstrate an interest/ aptitude for this type of work.  
Responsibilities
  • Successfully manage projects (or elements of projects, such as an excavation)  
  • Candidates should be willing to navigate commercial archaeology practices and effectively liaise with clients.  
  • Prior knowledge of health and safety protocols specific to archaeology is preferred.  
  • The candidate should also be proficient in utilizing a range of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word and Excel.  
  • Demonstrate a track record in producing high-quality consultancy documents/ reports and a publication record would be beneficial.  
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are essential, along with strong organizational abilities.  
  • The ability to multitask effectively, manage time efficiently, and mediate/facilitate discussions is highly valued.  
  • Work independently and take initiative when necessary. 
  • Flexibility as regards travel and site/ meeting attendance is essential, but it is expected that a significant element of this job will be desk-based.  
  • The ability to build and grow the team and manage large projects   
Skills and Qualifications 
  • An in-depth understanding of Scottish archaeology, coupled with comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation and frameworks is essential.  
  • Track record in the autonomous completion of archaeological reports and/or publications is essential and examples will be requested.    
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written is essential.  
  • A full clean driving licence is essential.

Project Assistants

Job Summary 
We are looking for enthusiastic and skilful Project Assistants to join us in our UK office. The central task of the Project Assistant is to excavate and record archaeological features on-site, under direction from the Project Supervisor.  This role may also be required to undertake certain office duties including data entry and environmental and/or finds processing.

 Summary of essential job functions 
  • Adherence to disciplinary codes of conduct and taking direction from the Project Supervisor on such matters 
  • Adherence to all Health & Safety and Waste Management policies and taking direction from the Project Supervisor on such matters 
  • Ensuring that they have adequate equipment, tools and resources to complete the task/duty assigned to them. 
  • Ensuring that best archaeological practice is followed at all times, within the terms of Red River’s excavation manual 
  • Implementing the instructions of the Project Supervisor regarding excavation strategies to ensure completion of the site/project on schedule and within budget 
  • Carrying out the tasks assigned to them in a timely and efficient manner 
  • Working to ensure that their section of the site/project is completed on schedule 
  • Ensuring that their section of the Site Archive is complete and maintained to the highest possible standards 
  • Undertaking archaeological monitoring of construction/demolition works as required 
  • Assistance with logistical works associated with site set up, general maintenance and site closure including (but not limited to) loading and unloading of tools equipment and samples; general cleaning/ sweeping and tidying of compounds, cabins (inc. contents), roads and vehicles; moving, laying down and maintenance of barrow boards;  cleaning and maintenance of tools, samples buckets and similar; assisting with lifting and moving of traffic management equipment; assistance with lifting, moving, erection or dismantling of fencing including edge protection and perimeter fencing

  • Cataloguing and assessing the Site Archive
